Safe Chemical Handling (SCH) Training is a structured programme designed for employees who work with hazardous chemicals in the workplace whether they are involved in supplying, storing, using or disposing of them. Under USECHH 2000 and the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, employers are legally required to provide SCH Training to employees exposed to chemical hazards, to prevent harm to people, property and the environment.

Safe Chemical Handling (SCH) Training equips participants with essential knowledge and practical skills to safely manage chemicals. This includes understanding chemical hazards and classifications, reading and using Safety Data Sheets (SDS), recognising pictograms and learning how to store, label and dispose of chemicals properly. Practical sessions, group discussions and case studies further enhance understanding and reinforce safe practices.
A critical component of Safe Chemical Handling (SCH) Training is teaching spill preparedness and emergency response. Participants learn how to use spill kits, bunds and pallets to contain leaks and follow standard procedures to minimise risks during spillage events. Regular container inspections and chemical labelling are also emphasised to prevent accidental exposure or mishandling.
Safe Chemical Handling (SCH) Training also includes comprehensive instruction on selecting and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves, goggles, respirators and protective footwear ensuring participants understand when and how to use PPE effectively in chemical handling contexts.
Participation in Safe Chemical Handling (SCH) Training supports compliance with Malaysian regulations, notably Regulation 22 of USECHH 2000, which requires employers to train workers every two years and whenever there is a change in chemical hazard information or job duties. This training reduces workplace accidents, promotes safety awareness and builds a culture of caution in chemical handling environments.
